LISTEN! Can you hear the drumbeats of war resounding from the four corners of Nigeria? Can you see that the drummers and dancers are not the typical soldiers in a typical war? Neither are they soldiers of fortune a.k.a mercenary. No. But the dancers and soldiers share a common purpose – the enemy must be crushed at all cost once the battle line has been drawn. The dancers to the drumbeats of war now are the politicians from both the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, the ruling party and the All Progressive Congress, APC, the opposition.  The foot soldiers of the chief warriors (the presidential candidates of both the PDP and APC, President Goodluck Jonathan and General Muhammadu Buhari, (rtd), respectively) in the ensuing political battle in Nigeria are all very media savvy.

Since the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, drew the battle line and blew the whistle for the campaigns to start in January, politicians have been on a macabre dance of shame and raising the tension in the land. In their bid to outdo their opponents, they make inflammatory speeches, creating the impression that the country will soon implode if their wishes are not met. They have been saber-rattling and engaging the media in what could have been very entertaining moments if not for the seriousness of the issues at hand – the violence and hate speeches that have laced the presidential campaigns.

The diatribe between the campaigns notched  up towards the end of January with the supporters of the presidential candidates threatening to go to war. Some are already casting pure water sachet and stones. Realnews has been following the presidential campaigns and activities of the war mongers and decided to calm your fears by letting you what it is all about. In doing this, we are hopeful like millions of Nigerians that the situation will not worsen but will cease once the elections are held and winners and losers emerge. The cover story for this week’s edition which captures all the egregious grandstanding in the political square is entitled: Battle for the Soul of Nigeria.  Maureen Chigbo, editor, wrote the story which you will find very interesting. Enjoy it.
