THE Katsina State Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) has started collecting wastes from drainage channels in Katsina and Daura.
Malam Nura Saulawa, its spokesman, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday during an interview.
“The agency has similarly ordered its offices in the 34 local government areas to clear wastes in the drainage channels to avert flooding in the areas during the coming raining season.
“The agency has started clearing the gutters in order to have an early commencement of the project.
“The agency has deployed some tippers to go round to evacuate the wastes removed from gutters to dump sites outside the major towns,’’ he said.
Saulawa said that the agency had mobilised the Youth Development Association that registered with the organisation to assist in clearing gutters.
“We have directed the youth association to clear the wastes from the gutters and our tippers would ferry the refuse to dump sites.
“We don’t want a situation where when rain starts, the towns will experience flood disaster,” he said.
The spokesman called on all stakeholders to stop children from dumping refuse in gutters in urban and rural areas of the state.
Saulawa commended the Katsina State Government for giving the agency the logistic support to carry out the programme to avert flooding in the state. (NAN)
