THE Lagos State Government will construct 181 roads in its 57 councils this year, 67 more than the 114 roads it built across the councils last year.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State this disclosed at the sixth Quarterly Town Hall Meeting at the Ajelogo Housing Scheme, in Mile 12, on Thursday, January 19, saying each council would get two roads.

Ambode said the increase became necessary because some of the 114 roads do not link major roads. He said further: “majority of the questions asked are on roads because of the success recorded with the 114 roads last year which we did two roads per local government. “I want to pronounce here that you should watch out next week in the newspapers, we are advertising 181 roads which would be done in all our local governments.

“What we have found out is that if we decided to continue with two, some of those roads are not linking each other to the main road, so most likely you would see that if we are supposed to do some roads in some local governments, it would only make economic sense if there is a linkage.

“So you would see in the advert that some local governments would have like three, some would have four roads, but the average is that 181 if you divide it by 57 that would be a minimum of three roads for each local government.”

He said the roads that would benefit from the initiative had been identified by the local governments and engineers to ensure that they have economic importance.

Ambode said his administration was addressing the housing challenge, pointing out that the “Rent-To-Own and Rental Housing Policy” came into effect last quarter, with the provision of affordable housing units in the state’s three senatorial districts. According to him, 4,355 units are available, with over 500 applicants prequalified so far. Allocation, he said, would begin next week.

He said the government recorded success in agriculture, with the production and sale of LAKE Rice last month.

“We are also rehabilitating the Oko-Oba Abattoir and Lairage Complex, Agege, in line with the promise to increase meat production output, develop the red meat value chain and restructure the complex for improved operations, “he said.
