OLAITAN Ibrahim, Omolayo Bose and  Ndidi Nwosu have added to Nigeria’s medal haul at the World Para-Powerlifting Championships in Mexico. Olaitan lifted 110kg to win silver in the women’s +67kg while Omolayo lifted 129kg in the women’s +79kg to win silver as well.

The Rio 2016 Paralympics gold medallist Nwosu lifted 120kg to win bronze in the women’s +73kg earlier on Thursday, December 7. The competition ends on Saturday. Other Nigerian lifters will be in action on Friday and Saturday.

The latest performance brings Nigeria’s medal haul to six – two gold, two silver and two bronze. Nigeria is third in the  table behind China, who have 11 medals – five gold, four silver and two bronze – and Iran, who have won six medals – two gold, three silver and one bronze.

Folashade Oluwafemiayo on Sunday won gold as she broke the world record in the women’s +86kg while Lucy Ejike on Wednesday won the second gold in the women’s +61kg and former world record holder Yakubu Adesokan won bronze in the men’s +49kg on Tuesday.

An excited Ibrahim told paralympic.org that she did not expect to win any medal because it was her first outing at the worlds. “I am so happy, this is fantastic. This was my first worlds and I was not expecting to win any medal at all,” she said.

But Ndidi was disappointed with her performance. She told paralympic.org, “I am not happy at all. I won gold at Rio 2016, so I was expecting to win gold again at Mexico City 2017 but I could only win bronze. I really hope I can do better in my next competition.”
