PLATEAU United claimed top position in the Nigeria Professional Football League following a comfortable 3-0 home win against El-Kanemi Warriors at the New Jos Stadium on Wednesday.

The champions now have nine points from four games, same points as second-placed Akwa United but have a better goal than the Promise Keepers.

Jimmy Ambrose headed Plateau United in front in the second minute, while Joshua Obaje added the second six minutes later.

Rapheal Ayagwa netted his side’s third of the game, his second of the season, two minutes after the break.

At the Confluence Stadium, Lokoja, Akwa United recorded the only away win of the day with a 2-1 victory against Niger Tornadoes.

Dennis Nya opened scoring for Abdu Maikaba’s men from the spot in the 23rd minute after Adeshina Gata was upended in the box by a Niger Tornadoes defender.

Nosifu Afeez equalised for the hosts two minutes before the break.

Victor Mbaoma however won the game for the visitors when he nodded the ball home 16 minutes from the end following a mix-up in the Niger Tornadoes defence.

It was the former Remo Stars striker’s second goal of the season.

In Damaturu, Lobi Stars suffered their first defeat of the season and also surrendered top position in the table after they went down to a 1-0 defeat against Yobe Desert Stars.

Former Abia Warriors strike Chinedu Ohanachom scored the decisive goal six minutes from time.

Six-time champions Enugu Rangers secured their second win of the season after a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Katsina United at the Nnamdi Azikwe Stadium, Enugu.

The Flying Antelopes were frustrated for long spells in the game but got the winning goal courtesy of a 78th minute strike by Godwin Aguda.

Also at the Agege Stadium, MFM FC earned a 2-1 win against hard-fighting FC IfeanyiUbah.

New signing Jesse Akile and Sikiru Olatunbosun got the goals for MFM FC, while Ivorian striker Seka Pascal scored the Anambra Warriors’ only goal of the keenly contested encounter.

MFM are now unbeaten in 25 games at home with 21 wins and four draws.

Kano Pillars forward Junior Lokosa scored his fourth goal of the season as the Sai Masu Gida defeated Abia Warriors 2-1 at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano.

Nyima Nwagua scored the curtain raiser for Pillars in the 28th minute , while Ndifreke Effiong equalised from a simple tap-in following a good work by Samson Obi in the 59th minute.

Effiong has scored three times in the NPFL this season.

Lokossa netted the winner two minutes later.

In another match day four fixture, promoted Go Round FC and Heartland battled to a 1-1 draw in Omoku.

Solomon Nwachukwu opened scoring for home team Go Round in the 11th minute, while veteran midfielder Julius Ubido levelled scores for the Naze Millionaires in the 53rd minute.

Two late goals by Yahuza Bala and Joseph Sasere helped Sunshine Stars beat Rivers United 2-0 in Akure.

In the day’s last fixture, 10-man Kwara United picked their first win of the season following a 1-0 victory against Wikki Tourists.
