Onitsha Main Market is champion of Governor Willie Obiano Traders Cup

GOVERNOR Willie Obiano of Anambra State has said that the essence of Traders’ Football Tournament was to ensure that the youths were happy and busy.

Obiano said this at the finals of the “Governor Willie Obiano Traders Cup”, staged at the Godwin Achebe Mini Stadium, Onitsha, Onitsha South LGA.

Nkem Okeke, the deputy governor of Anambra State, who represented the governor at the occasion thanked the 61 markets associations that took part for their support during the last Governorship Election.

He pledged that their efforts would be rewarded.

“The state will continue to live in peace and security under Governor Obiano’s watch,” he added.

The competition involved 36 market association teams in the state, with Onitsha Main market emerging the 2017 champions.

New Motors Spare Parts and ATDA Belgium Market, Nkpor were placed second and third positions respectively.

Uju Nwogu, the commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, said the tournament was aimed at bringing peace, unity and brotherly love among competing teams.

While advising youths to remain focussed and steadfast, she said: “the Governors’ commitment in developing the sport sector has gone a long way in proving his love and desire for brighter future for youths in the state’’.

The president of the Amalgamated Traders Association, AMTA, south east zone, Okwudili Ezenwankwo described Obiano as the only `trader friendly governor.’

He noted that Obiano has provided many infrastructure; security and other amenities at markets in the state.

Trophy and cash prize of a million naira was handed over to the winning team, and N500, 000 was given to the Nnewi Motor Spare Parts for placing second while the third place winners, the Amalgamated Tyre Dealers Association, Nkpor went home N300, 000.
