10 African migrants drown off Djibouti – IOM

No fewer than 10 African migrants returning from Yemen have died off the coast of Djibouti in the horn of Africa, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) said on Thursday.

“Their bodies washed up on shore. Dedicated Search and Rescue efforts are urgently needed,” the UN body said in a tweet.

Many African migrants – mostly from Ethiopia but also Somalia and elsewhere – make the trip across the Gulf of Aden to Saudi Arabia and Yemen in search of work.

In 2019, according to the IOM, 138,000 people from the Horn of Africa arrived by boat on the Yemeni coast.

Earlier this month, Amnesty International released a damning report detailing how Ethiopian migrants in detention in Saudi Arabia are “being held in life-threatening conditions.”

Most of the Ethiopians in Saudi Arabia were previously working in neighbouring Yemen, but were forced to leave because of the civil war there. (dpa/NAN)
