10,000 indigent students apply for Kano State scholarship – Official

ABUBAKAR Zakari, Executive Secretary, Kano State Scholarship Board, says over 10,000 students have applied for the 2020 scholarship scheme in the state.

Zakari made this known on Monday in Kano during a visit by the graduating students of the Al Mansoura University, Egypt.

He said that the Board had made provision for over 40,000 slots to enable eligible students to apply through its portal., adding that the Board on Sept. 1 began online registration for the prospectus applicants.

The secretary disclosed that the state government had approved upward review of allowances for the students of the state studying in various of institutions of higher learning in the country.

“The state government had earmarked over N250 million to settle the outstanding tuition fees and other clearance fees for our students that graduated from Al Mansoura University.

“The state government sponsored some students to the university but the tuition and clearance fees were not paid.

“The school decided to returned the students back home, however, following the intervention of Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje, they were able to complete their programmes,” he said.

Zakari noted that the students graduated from the university since 2018, unfortunately they could not collect their certificates due to the non payment of the fees.

He added that the Board had initiated payment process to the university to enable it issue certificates to  the affected students.

In a remark, Muhammad Yusuf, the President, Kano State Student Union, Al Masoura University chapter, lauded the gesture,  adding that it would go a long way to improve the wellbeing of the students towards achieving academic excellence.

The union also presented letter of commendation to the secretary for his support to its members. (NAN)
