‘ORUMBA Rebirth Group’, a socio-political organisation, it is working to ensure that only credible candidates from Orumba North and South Local Government in Anambra get elected during the 2023 General Elections.

Dr Chibuike Echem, President of Princeton Leadership Forum and Convener of the group, said at the official inauguration of the group in Abuja on Tuesday, that it was time to work against poor leadership.

“The common denominator that brings us together is the interest of Orumba North and South that is the objective that is pushing us.

“We want to know who is representing us; we want to know what the person is bringing to the table.

“We want to know the person’s antecedents, the person’s capacities, the person’s previous activities,’’ Echem said.

The convener said that the driving motive of the group was the passion for dividends of democracy to reach and touch the lives of ordinary citizens of the two local governments.

He explained that topmost on the agenda of the group was to mainstream proper representation for Orumba North and South.

Echem said poor representation by ”mediocre leaders was the bane of politics of that area and that since votes do count, candidates seeking votes from the local governments must showcase their programmes.”

He stated that previous representations from various political parties left the people ”unsatisfied and impoverished.

“So, the grand agenda of this group is to make sure that we identify individuals who have the capacity, who have content, developmental interest of Orumba to push that agenda together.

“People who are mindful of the teeming young people of Orumba that are looking for opportunities, somebody who is vocal enough to represent us,’’ he said.

Echem further said that the group was interested in making sure those candidates seeking elective positions, especially in the two local governments are those they would ”know, trust and build relationships.”

He said, presently, they were building their grassroots, their strong base and wards and interestingly, while they also mobilised and sensitised new voters to participate in the concluded voters registration exercise to participate.

“We have not endorsed any candidate as we speak because it is purely credibility of a particular candidate.

“Orumba Rebirth Group is a movement, a movement of young progressive people who are determined to take Orumba destiny and shape it.

“This is not about money, it is not about who gets what, what goes to my personal pocket, this is about our collective interest.

“We are concerned about what infrastructure can a candidate put in Orumba that will benefit every single person,’’ Echem said.

He said his message to members was that ”they should not mortgage their future for peanuts, that politicians do not have to give peanuts just to buy their votes.

“ Let us stand this time and take a decision purely on the basis of antecedents of individuals.

“On the basis of the person’s capacity and on the basis of the person’s exposure and knowledge of the work he is going to do.” (NAN)
