IN the last five years, more than 22.7 million subscribers in Nigeria have activated the Do-Not-Disturb, DND, code.

Realnews reports that the DND Code (2442) is the NCC’s shortcode to completely stop receiving telemarketing and other unsolicited text messages on customers’ phones.

The campaign commenced in 2015 with only 500,000 telecom subscribers activating the Do-Not-Disturb shortcode.

The code became necessary following increasing complaints by subscribers because of the nuisance of unsolicited messages and marketing calls from network operators.

According to Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, the code is in furtherance of the commission’s mandate to protect the interests of consumers and support a robust telecommunications sector in Nigeria.

Prof. Umar Danbatata, executive vice-chairman, NCC, at a virtual conference meeting organized by the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria, ATCON, emphasised the need to protect and empower telecom subscribers.

Danbatta said NCC, in keeping with its mandates and the eight-Point Agenda, will continue to inform and educate the telecom consumers on their rights, new developments in the sector, and other emerging issues they need to know about.

The commencement of the campaign saw the activation of the Do-Not-Disturb code grew to over 21 million, 21,704,061 to be precise in the year 2018, while in the year 2019, the commission recorded 22,196,712 subscribers had activated the DND (2442) shortcode.

The NCC has continued to receive numerous complaints from subscribers, following dissatisfaction in service delivery. The other component of the campaign was to sensitize Nigerians to the existence of the NCC’s toll-free line, 622, which consumers could use to lodge complaints with regard to the quality of service and other related services.

Realnews had reported that more than 98 percent of the total service-related complaints received from telecoms consumers within a 15-month period, spanning January 2019 to April 2020, have been successfully resolved by NCC.
