MAGISTRATE T. Akanni of the Ogudu Magistrate Court in Lagos State on Thursday granted bail to three men who allegedly conspired to steal building materials worth N1 million.

The accused: Victor Nelson, 35; Bassey Kingsley, 27; and Abubakar Azeez, 24; alongside some others currently at large, are facing trial on a two-count charge of stealing and conspiracy.

Victor lives on Solomon Bankole Street in Egbeda, Bassey lives in Buhari Street, Ogudu and Abubakar lives in Taye Street, Ijeshatedo, all in Lagos State.

They were alleged to have stolen the goods from a building solution factory.

Magistrate Akanni granted each of them a bail of N150, 000 with two sureties each.

She also said that the sureties must show evidence of gainful employment and three years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government as part of their bail conditions.

The accused had earlier pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against them by the court.

Police prosecutor Lucky Ihiehie told the court that the accused committed the offences on June 16 at No. 51A, Emmanuel High St., Ojota.

Ihiehie said that Mr Oyatomi Olawole, the accountant to the company where the materials were stolen reported the case at the Ogudu Police Station.

“On June 16, Olawole received a report from their newly employed security guard that some of their staff conspired and stole some building materials from the company.

“He alleged that the accused stole some valuable machines and rubber rolls worth N1 million from the company.’’

Ihiehie said that the company’s management had to investigate the report supplied by the security guard before taking any action.

“On June 20, Victor was arrested with four rolls of rubber inside his bag after the official closing hours.

“The police also arrested Bassey and Abubakar following useful information supplied by Victor.’’

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 provides three years’ jail term for stealing, while Section 411 prescribes two years for conspiracy.

The case was adjourned until Aug.6
