FOUR Italian men aged 19 to 23 have been arrested in connection with the gang rape of two British underage girls, prosecutors and police said on Friday.

Four other men are believed to have taken part in the same crime. Three have been identified, while police are still looking for the fourth.

The “brutality, gravity and savagery (of the crime), committed in a devious manner, could have been repeated against other defenseless women” police said in a statement.

The incident took place in Marconia, a town in the southern region of Basilicata, on the night of Sept. 7 – 8 in the garden of a private villa.

The two British tourists, who speak no Italian, were approached by a group of locals they had never seen before during a party, police said.

The men were initially friendly, but, taking advantage of the girls’ drunken condition, later forced them into a dark area and took turns sexually assaulting them, police said.

The four arrested were placed in pre-trial detention. (dpa/NAN)
