A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Tuesday, sentenced a 23-year-old man, Fidelis Joseph, to seven months imprisonment for impersonation.

The convict, who resides at Idu Estate, Abuja, was arraigned on a three-count charge of impersonating a public servant, theft and causing nuisance.

He pleaded guilty to the charge and begged the court for mercy.

The judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, summarily convicted him and pronounced seven months jail sentence on him.

Sadiq, however, gave the convict an option to pay N5, 000 as fine, and said that it would serve as deterrent to others.

He also ordered the convict to pay N7, 650 to the complainant in the case, as compensation.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Zannah Dalhatu, had told the court that one Saheed Adeniji of Last Gate, Karmo, reported the matter at the Karmo Police Station on April 2.

He said that on the same date, Joseph went to the complainant’s shop and forcefully took a pack of yoghurt valued N150 and refused to pay.

Dalhatu said that when the convict was confronted, he presented himself as a soldier in Nigeria Army.

He, however, said that during police investigation, it was revealed that the convict stole the complainant’s goods worth N7, 650 and was arrested for impersonation.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened the provisions of Sections 132, 287 and 199 of the Penal Code.
