Sports consultant charged with N400, 000 Azerbaijan visa fraud

A 54-year-old man, Rabiu Adesiji who allegedly obtained N400,000 under the pretext of secure an
Azerbaijan Visa for a man, was on Wednesday charged before an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court.

The accused, a sports consultant, who resides at 4, Mobolaji Ajasa Crescent, Ilogbo area of Ogun, is being tried for obtaining by false
pretences, stealing and causing a breach of peace.

The Prosecutor, Police Insp. Raji Akeem told the court that the offences were committed sometime in June 2017 at Suite 57, Plaza 2,
Ijaiye, a Lagos suburb.

Akeem said the accused collected N400, 000 from the complainant, Mr Benjamin Adebayo, on the pretext of helping his client, Mr Victor
to secure an Azerbaijan visa (located on Asia continent).

“The accused failed to collect the visa and did not pay back the complainant’s money and since then, he has been on the run.

“Effort to locate him failed as he changed location,’’ he said.

Akeem added that the accused was later sighted by the complainant, who raised an alarm and was apprehended by the passerby.

The offences contravened Sections 168(d), 280 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused is liable to 15 years imprisonment for obtaining credit by false pretences.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Chief Magistrate Jadesola Adeyemi-Ajayi granted the accused to a bail of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

She adjourned the case until April 23.
