Govt troops arrest Five Coupists in Gabon

A spokesman of ailing President Ali Bongo’s government told journalists the coup attempt announced by five junior military officers earlier on Monday had be foiled.

Libreville, the nation’s capital is reported calm with government troops now in charge of the state broadcasting stations.

The spokesman said four of the coupists have been arrested with the fifth on the run.

Ali Bongo is reported seriously ill in Morocco.

His family dynasty has ruled oil-rich Gabon for over 50 years. He succeeded his late father in 2009 and won re-election in a severely disputed 2016 polls.

Today, Gabonese army officers have announced military takeover of power from President Alli Bongo who is in Morocco for medical treatment.

It was reported that a National Restoration Council is in place.
