South Sudanese Officials have accused cattle raiders from neighbouring Kenya of crossing the border and killing 19 local herders.

Fighting broke out after cattle raiders crossed into Kapoeta state along the border between South Sudan and Kenya, state Minister for Information Joseph Kabaka told dpa on Wednesday.

The clashes left 19 South Sudanese and 7 Kenyans dead.

“We have confirmed 26 people dead and 15 more were wounded in the raids,’’ Kabaka said.

The minister said cattle had been stolen and some children were also missing.

He urged Kenya to investigate the incident.

Cattle raiding have occurred for centuries in East Africa, and children are sometimes abducted during raids to be used as domestic slaves.

The raids often carry an ethnic component. (dpa/NAN)
