THE African swine fever has been well contained in Vietnam yet it is highly possible that it may reoccur and spread in large scale, the country’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said on Wednesday.

The ministry noted that majority of infected localities, where the fever had occurred, have declared clear of the disease and only 16 provinces and cities in Vietnam have the fever to date.

Vietnam News Agency cited the Department of Animal Health under Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, adding that a total of 27,662 pigs have been culled, due to swine fever since early this year.

The news agency cited Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien as saying there is, however, a high risk of African swine reoccurring and spreading in large scale in time to come.

He noted that local authorities need to proactively implement measures in order to have early detection and timely warnings as well as to completely handle the situation upon discovering the fever.

According to the news agency, in 2019, African swine fever spread to all 63 provinces and cities in Vietnam, leading to the culling of over 5.9 million pigs. (Xinhua/NAN)
