THE ministry of agriculture, mechanisation, processing and export in Anambra State is set to situate yam-market and cassava processing yards in Oroma Etiti, Onono, and Nzam.

The ministry is doing this in collaboration with International Fund for Agriculture, IFAD, and Value Chain Development programme,VCDP.

Afam Mbanefo,  agric commissioner, made this known when he played host to the Transition Committee Chairman of Anambra West, Tony Collins Nwabunwanne in his office at Awka.

Mbanefo said he had secured approval for the expansion of the Otupu Market structures, and borehole to service the VIP toilet facility at the market based on appeal by the transition committee chairman.

He, then, reiterated the state government’s commitment toward giving Anambra West a facelift under the leadership of Governor Willie Obiano.

Emmanuel Aguncha, Anambra coordinator for IFAD,  said that open market stalls and lockup shops had already been built in Otupu Market and Umueze Anam, respectively.

He noted that that three local councils, including Anambra West, East and Orumba benefitted from the programme.

Aguncha praised efforts of the state government toward uplifting the living standards of Anambra people.

Responding, Nwabunwanne thanked the commissioner and his IFAD counterpart for considering the councils in the area for the project execution.

“Anambra West being agrarian community needs ultra-modern market so that people can easily sell their farm produce.

“It is through inputs from state government, IFAD and other development agencies that development can be achieved.’’

He, then, pleaded that more of those should be allotted to the local councils.

Mike Ogbuekwe, senior special assistant to the governor on Agriculture, said that agriculture was one of the key bedrocks of Governor Obiano administration.

He, then, promised to visit the Oroma-Etiti, Onono and Nzam markets in subsequent visits.
