Gombe govt.increases supply capacity of treatment plant to check water scarcity

THE Dadi- Kowa water treatment plant in Gombe State has increased its daily supply of water to Gombe metropolis and environs, from 10 million litres, to 43 million litres daily.

Malam Abubakar Bappa, Ag .General Manager of the state Water Board Gombe,who is also the chairman task force on water supply , disclosed this in Gombe on Tuesday during a ceremony organized to mark the commencement of reticulatiin work in some parts of Gombe metropolis.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that Gov. Inuwa Yahaya had, on assumption of office, inaugurated task force to address the incessant scarcity of potable water in Gombe and environs.

Bappa said prior to the inauguration of the task force, the treatment plant was discharging less than 10 million litres to Gombe and environs, which was insufficient.

He said apart from Yamaltu/Deba Local Government Area where the treatment plant is located, the remaining 10 LGAs had problem of water supply.

According to him, investigation revealed that the past administration was owing the Chinese company who were I charge of maintenance of the treatment plant, N5 billion, and Jos Electricity Distribution, N 750 million .

In his speech,Gov. Inuwa Yahaya said Dadin-Kowa treatment plant,which gulped N8.9 billion, was initially designed to discharge 50 million litres daily.

He said the water from the plant was supposed to supply 15 settlements, apart from the state capital.

“ But because of selfish interest, some people diverted the water to their fish ponds, block industries and other personal use,” he said.

He assured that his administration will do everything possible to ensure that majority of Gombe people benefitted from the plant.
