A Poultry expert, Mr. Joel Oduware, has advised poultry farmers on precautionary measures in protecting their flock against rain and adverse weather conditions.
Oduware told the News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) in Lagos on Monday that the caution became imperative following the commencement of the rainy season.
The expert said that to prevent loss of their investments and flocks, local farmers should protect their farms and birds against weather anomalies.
“To avert losses, it is advisable that the farmers cover their chicken pen properly so as not to make them susceptible to sicknesses and diseases this rainy season.
“We need to take the measures to protect our birds this rainy season and in adverse weather conditions by the use of tarpaulin to wrap the nettings on the wall and on the fence.
“We also heat up the poultry house with the use of hot coal pots or through a kerosene stove. In developed countries, they use more of electric breathing energy to warm their birds.
“Some farmers also cover more of the poultry house with nylons to prevent cold breeze from affecting the temperature of the birds and having cold into their body system,” the expert said.
Oduware also urged farmers to be more observant and sensitive to the health of their flock this season because the rains were unpredictable.
He added that farmers’ observation should be focused on a balance in the temperature of the poultry birds at all times.
“The poultry farmers also need to be more observant of their farms because you never can tell when the rains will come or when it will strike again.
“Poultry farmers need to spend more time around their farms to observe their birds during the rainy season because one cold bird can infect the entire flock.
“We need to take the necessary precautions to protect our birds this season because a flooded poultry farm spells huge losses for the farmer.
“As much as the birds are sensitive to heat, they are also sensitive to adverse and cold weather conditions, so an expert farmer needs to balance the temperature for the birds at all times,” Oduware said. (NAN)
