The Association of Indigenous Filmmakers of Nigeria (AIFCON) has urged movie producers and content creators to take the lead in promoting the nation’s culture.

The Director of AIFCON, Jane Thomas, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos.

According to her, the association is concerned that many filmmakers and content creators have lost touch with their cultural roots due to the westernised approach to life.

“This is evident in the type of content they produce, which often lacks authenticity and cultural relevance.

“The time has come for us to reconnect with our cultural roots and origins,” she said.

She, however, said the association would not relent in reversing this trend through its constant promotion for indigenous contents.

According to Thomas, understanding one’s cultural heritage is essential for knowing where one is headed.

Thomas, who is also an actor, said AIFCON was coming up with strategies to promote indigenous content and filmmaking.

“Our roadmap for 2025 is centered on establishing a hierarchical structure that extends to the ward level, facilitating connections with content creators and grassroots communities.

“We believe that it is essential to establish a presence at the ward level, where a rich diversity of cultures and traditions exists.

“By doing so, we can connect filmmakers and content creators with grassroots communities and promote indigenous content that reflects Nigeria’s true cultural heritage.

“This approach is designed to promote indigenous content and filmmaking, while also showcasing Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity,” she said.

Thomas noted that Nollywood films had the power to project a positive image of Nigeria, contradicting the prevalent corrupt image.

“As content creators and filmmakers, we aim to demonstrate the authenticity and originality of Nigeria, highlighting the resilience and positivity of the Nigerian people.

“By God’s grace, we will contribute our best efforts to promote a positive image of Nigerians, both domestically and internationally, thereby contributing to the growth of the Nollywood industry and the Nigerian economy at large,” she said.

Thomas said the association was seeking financial support from the government and patriotic Nigerians to promote indigenous content and filmmaking.

“AIFCON plans to submit proposals to NGOs involved in cultural activities and seek government support by collaborating with relevant parastatals.

“The association is also committed to promoting Nollywood’s global reputation and distinguishing it from other prominent competitors in the film industries worldwide,” she said. (NAN)
