THE National Union of Air Transport Employees, NUATE, has rejected the decision of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, to cut the salary of workers. Ocheme Aba, general secretary, NUATE, said the decision of FAAN was contrary to the earlier agreement between the union and the management.

In an internal circular made available to Realnews, with reference number: NUATE.GS/MD.FAAN/ENP/004-20, Aba insisted that FAAN should pay workers full salary.   The circular dated Wednesday, May 20 reads: “We have received representation from our Branch Union on your circular to the workers over your decision to pay only 50 percent of May salary due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We wish to state that your management’s decision is contrary to the understanding between the unions and the management that there will be a constant dialogue between the parties on the issue of payment of salaries during this period of COVID-19.

“We, therefore, disagree with your decision to pay 50% of May salaries. We are willing and ready to keep our side of the bargain by making ourselves available for dialogue over the issue at any time. Meanwhile, we urge you to honour your obligation to your workers by ensuring full payment of May salaries,” he said.

Realnews had reported that FAAN notified its workers that starting from May 2020, they would be paid half salary as a way of cushioning the impact of COVID-19. “This is to notify all staff that due to the dwindling revenue generation amidst COVID-19 pandemic, management may not be able to pay full salary to staff from May 2020.

“However, as soon as the revenue situation improves, the balance will be paid. This measure is to ensure the survival of the organization,” it said.
