THE Senate of the Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu Alike Ikwo (AEFUNAI) has fixed July 1 as new date for the institution’s 9th matriculation earlier slated to hold on Friday, June 18.

The new date is contained in a statement signed by Mrs Odisa Okeke, Registrar/Secretary of Senate and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abakaliki.

According to the statement, the decision to postpone the matriculation to July 1 was reached at the 68th regular meeting of the Senate held on Wednesday, June 16.

The statement noted that Senate observed that less than half of the candidates who accepted the institution’s offer of admission were yet to register and obtain registration numbers.

It also observed that candidates experienced bottle necks at different stages of the registration process, including perceived anxiety among parents due to the recent insecurity around the university.

Okeke added that most 100 level students placed more importance to attending lectures than doing their registration.

The statement read in part: “After due considerations, the Senate decided to approve the rescheduling of the 9th matriculation of the university to Thursday, July 1.

“That Monday, June 21 and Tuesday, June 22, 2021 respectively be observed as lecture free days for100 level students only, to enable those who have not registered to do so.

“Direct that staff who are critically involved in the registration process should work extra time and be remunerated to ensure that the registration of 100 level students is concluded before the new matriculation date.

” Direct deans of faculties to ensure that the affected 100 level students avail themselves of the opportunity to complete their registration within the period of extension.”

The statement further directed deans of various facilities to hasten the information to heads of departments and relevant staff in their faculties, while the dean of Students Affairs should notify the Students Union Government accordingly. (NAN)
