Amotekun: Youths protest in Ekiti

YORUBA youths drawn from six states in the South West on Tuesday, March 17, protested against the establishment of Amotekun by the southwest governors.

Realnews reports that the protest in Ekiti followed the signing of the bill establishing Amotekun into law by Governor Fayemi of Ekiti on Monday, March 16.

The establishment of Amotekun, which was announced in January by the South West governors was lauded by elders in Yoruba land including Wole Soyinka, Nobel laureate and Gani Adams, national leader, Odua Peoples’ Congress, as a remedy to the security challenges in the region.

However, protesting youths, arrived Ado-Ekiti as early as 8:15 am to register their displeasure against the inherent dangers in operation Amotekun carrying placards with various inscriptions such as “Amotekun Will turn our youths to militia group”, “Amotekun motive, shine your eyes”, “Amotekun can bring a proliferation of arms”, among others.

The youth want Amotekun scrapped in Ekiti, Oyo, Osun, Lagos, Ondo, and the Ogun States to avoid future calamity as they security outfit may be hijacked by some politicians.

Adeshina Animasaun, the coordinator of the protests, told journalists that although Amotekun was a laudable project, it could be hijacked by those nursing ambition in 2023.

He urged President Muhammadu Buhari to rejig the country’s security architecture to prevent the resurgence of what he called ‘militia groups’ which posed danger to the lives of the people.
