Applicant in court over alleged theft of phone worth N150,000, N50,000 cash

A 29-year-old man, Baba Stephen, was on Tuesday arraigned before a Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court, for allegedly stealing an Infinix cell phone worth N150,000 and N50,000 cash.
Stephen, a resident of Constitution Road, Kaduna, is standing trial on a two-count charge of criminal conspiracy and theft.
The Prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo, told the court that Rakiya Theophilus, of Kigo Road, Kaduna reported the matter at the Gabasawa Police Station on March 2.
Leo said that on the same date at about 3.45p.m. the defendant and two others now at large came to the complainant’s shop at Kigo Road Kaduna to buy trousers.
He said while the complainant and her sales girl were attending to other customers, the defendant and his friends stole the Infinix cell phone and the cash from the complainant’s bag.
The prosecutor said the defendant was caught in the act by the sales girl and handed over to the police, while his friends ran away.
Leo said the offences contravened the provisions of Sections 234 and 245 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Law, 2017.
The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N100,000, with one surety in like sum.
He said the surety must reside within the jurisdiction of the court and adjourned the case until March 31 for hearing. (NAN)
