The Anambra State House of Assembly has passed a resolution urging the state government to expedite action on erosion-control measure on many of the sites across the state.

The House specifically called on Governor Willie Obiano to direct the commissioner for Environment to wade into the erosion menace affecting some parts of Idemili South, LGA, including Ugwumba- Nkeme road.

Passing the resolution, Harford Oseke, deputy speaker of the House,  who presided over the plenary, said the call became necessary to control the erosion menace ravaging the areas.

According to Oseke, remedial action is needed to tackle erosion menace occasioned by flooding at Nkpor, Mgbemena Street, Awada, Enekwasumpi Obosi, Eziowelle Civic Centre Road and Amaeze village Oraukwu.

The resolution came through a motion sponsored by Nkoli Mmegbuanaeze, member representing Idemili North constituency,  and some others.

Earlier, Mmegbuanaeze had drawn the attention of the House to the erosion menace threatening private and public infrastructure in her constituency, which needed urgent intervention.

“If the erosion sites are urgently attended to, it will do the inhabitants good and put their minds at rest,’’ Mmegbuanaeze said.

Supporting the motion, member representing Anambra East, Mr Obinna Emenaka said that appropriate funds should be provided during 2019 Budget to aid concerned agencies in curbing erosion menace in the state.

Contributing, Chidi Udemadu, member representing Ihiala 1 constituency, emphasised the need to sensitise Ndi Anambra to support activities of government.

Government would help by keeping drainage systems free from blockage to avoid flooding which could lead to erosion.

Charles Ezeani, member representing Anaocha 2 Constituency, maintained that the bill on drainage should be passed into law so that offenders would be held accountable.

Ezeani said that the law would help to protect and care for drainage as well as help government to discharge its duties efficiently.

In an adjournment motion, Onyebuchi Offor, member representing Ekwusigo constituency,  commended Anambra Government for responding to Nkwo to Nkwo road rehabilitation project with officers of Anambra State Road Management Agency, ARMA.

He also said that work was ongoing at the said site and pleaded with the governor to expedite action on the erosion site at Ihembosi community.
