Australian PM joins world leaders in paying tribute to late Prince Philip

AUSTRALIAN Prime Minister Scott Morrison joined other world leaders in paying tribute to Prince Philip, the husband of Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away on Friday.

“Australians send our love and deepest condolences to her Majesty and all the Royal family.

“The Commonwealth family joins together in sorrow and thanksgiving for the loss and life of Prince Philip,” Morrison wrote in a statement posted on Twitter.

“He embodied a generation that we will never see again,” the premier said.

The prince “was no stranger to Australia, having visited our country on more than 20 occasions,” the premier added.

“Through his service to the Commonwealth he presided as patron or president of nearly 50 organizations in Australia,” he said.

Morrison announced that flags in Australia would be lowered “in honour of His Royal Highness.”

Norway’s royal family has also joined those expressing their condolences to Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II over the death of her husband Prince Philip.

“The Royal Family has received the news that His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh has passed away with great sorrow.

“Our thoughts are with Queen Elizabeth and the rest of her family. We also send our condolences to the British people,” said His Majesty King Harald in a statement.

According to the statement, flags at the palace balcony in Oslo are to be flown at half-mast on both Friday and the day of the funeral, which has yet to be announced.

Germany’s ambassador to Britain also expressed his condolences at the news of the death of Prince Philip.

“It is a great privilege that he visited us on so many occasions in Germany and has helped us to build a very close partnership between Britain and Germany,” Andreas Michaelis wrote on Twitter.

Michaelis said Philip would be greatly missed and that his thoughts were with the monarch and her family.

Similarly, Sweden’s King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia have expressed their deepest sympathies over the death of Prince Philip.

“Prince Philip has been a great friend of our family for many years, a relation which we have deeply valued,” the royal couple said in a statement.

“His service to his country will remain an inspiration to us all.

“We offer our sincere condolences to Her Majesty The Queen, The Royal Family and the people of the United Kingdom,” the family added.

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin extended his condolences to Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II on Friday, after her husband Prince Philip died Friday at the age of 99.

“My deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to HM Queen Elizabeth II, HRH The Prince of Wales, the Royal Family and the people of the United Kingdom on the death of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

“May his memory be a blessing,” Rivlin wrote on Twitter.

He was joined by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in paying tribute to the prince, who wrote on Twitter: “Prince Phillip was the consummate public servant and will be much missed in Israel and across the world.”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condoled the demise of Prince Philip, husband of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II.

“My thoughts are with the British people and the Royal Family on the passing away of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” Modi said in a tweet.

“He had a distinguished career in the military and was at the forefront of many community service initiatives. May his soul rest in peace.” (dpa/NAN
