Oliver Onwughalu, a former Awka Zonal chairman, Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, has raised an alarm over increasing number of cases of stroke in the country.

Onwughalu, who spoke to newsmen at Nawfia on some critical health issues, noted that the latest cases appear more predominant among the youths.

According to Onwughalu, it has been discovered that an appreciable percentage of the youths are living with high blood pressures that in most cases lead to diabetes.

He said that other sources of the stroke were linked to the high consumption of alcohol, red meat (animal protein), salt and sugar, as well as drug abuse and stress.

The medical practitioner noted with dismay that many food items sold by food vendors had high sugar and salt content, which were injurious to the body system.

Onwughalu stressed that the body system most abused were kidneys, a clearing house of all consumed solid and liquid foods.

“Such abuses give rise to kidney and liver problems, which are serious health issues,’’ Onwughalu said.

He urged people to check their blood pressures regularly and also strive to manage stress wisely by ensuring good exercise and rest.

Meanwhile, Onwughalu described diabetes mellitus, as having high sugar in the body system, noting that every individual has a pancreas, an organ that produces insulin that regulates sugar in the body.

“Everybody is born with certain cells known as the pancreas that produce insulin; but if threatened by excessive sugar consumption, the insulin is limited or depleted and this can result in danger and sometimes lead to diabetes,’’ he said.

Onwughalu urged the people to always regulate what they eat. “Do not see the mouth as a dustbin for the consumption of just everything.’’
