PRESIDENT, Nigeria Baptist Convention, Rev. Israel Akanji, has called for proper upbringing of children by parents to ensure a better society.

He made the remarks while speaking with newsmen on Sunday in Inisa, near Osogbo in Osun.

Akanji noted that failure on the part of parents to properly bring up their children, in addition to its negative implications of technological advancement, had been major causes of moral decadence and increased wave of criminality in the country.

The cleric stressed that most parents, under the guise of pursuing livelihood, had abandoned their roles to churches and schools.

He also appealed to the Federal Government to intensify efforts at curtailing banditry before the 2023 general elections.

Akanji noted that since political campaigns and elections had increased political activities and money in circulation, the bandits might take advantage of the situation to extort innocent Nigerians.

According to him, it is disheartening that banditry has now become a business through which criminals are making money.

He appealed to the Federal Government to ensure the release of the 121 students of Bethel High School, Kaduna, who were kidnapped by bandits recently.

The cleric, who noted that Baptist Church had been providing education in Nigeria since 1855, said that the attack on one of its schools was not a good way to pay the mission back.

Akanji urged government not to relent in its efforts at tackling the menace of banditry, adding that it must not be allowed to continue because of its negative effect on the citizens.
