Gbemi Saraki, senator and governorship candidate of Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, ACPN, in the 2011 governorship election in Kwara State, 50, May 3. Born in Ilorin, Kwara State, she was educated in Nigeria and the United Kingdom. She studied at the University of Sussex, United Kingdom, where she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics. She did her one year mandatory National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, scheme with the Nigerian Bank for Commerce and Industry, Lagos. She also worked with the Societe Generale Bank Limited. In 1994, she became executive director of Ashmount Insurance Brokers, Lagos, where she worked until 1999, when she was elected into the House of Representatives. She was later elected into the Senate where she served as chairman, Senate Committee on Marine Transport.

Tolu Ajayi, novelist, poet, playwright, newspaper columnist, and psychiatrist, 69, May 7. Born in Lagos, he studied at Archbishop Holgate’s School, York, England; University of Liverpool Medical School and University of St John’s New Foundation, Canada. He was a medical officer, Lagos State Hospital Management Board; medical director, Lagos City Clinic, and executive director, Granny Fatima Publishing. He is a member, Nigeria Medical Association, and member, Association of Nigerian Authors.

Jaitto-Johnson Omavuaire, graphic designer, chief executive officer, CEO, Fuxion Media Arts and pastor, Redeemed Christian Church of God, Lagos, 44, May 5. Born in Uwheru, Ugheli, North local government area, Delta State, he was educated at St Bernadette Primary School, Abeokuta; Unity School, Agbarho, Delta State; Auchi Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State, where he obtained diploma and Higher National Diploma in Graphic Design in 1995. Omavuaire started his advertising career with LTC Advertising, Lagos, as a trainee-creative artist, after which he moved to Campaign Palace Advertising; Angels Communications and Nucleus Marketing Company, Lagos. While in Nucleus Marketing Company, he rose to the position of group head; Creative Arts, before joining Explicit Communications where he was senior group head before leaving in  2003 to set up his own advertising firm — Design Communications and Concepts Limited, which he manages as the chief executive officer.

Yerima Parker Ahmed, playwright, dramatist, cultural administrator, 58, May 8. Born in Lagos, he was educated at the Lagos Baptist Academy; University of Ife; University College, Cardiff; Royal Holloway and Bedford New College, University of London, and Open University, England. Ahmed is an adjunct senior lecturer at the Creative Arts Development, University of Lagos. He is a recipient of the 2006 Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas, NLNG, prize for literature and he is the author of more than 25 plays, including Hard Ground; Attahiru, The Trials of Oba Ovonranwem and Tafida.

Tonye Graham-Douglas, administrator, and politician, 76, May 8. Born in Abonema, Degema local government area of Rivers State, he was educated at Bishop Crowther memorial School, Abonema, 1947-1950; Government School, Lagos, 1951-1954; Baptist High School, Port Harcourt, 1956-1960; University of Lagos, 1965-1969. Graham-Douglas has, at various times, served as administrative manager, Nigerian Petroleum Refining Company, NPRC; Rivers State commissioner for Youth, Sport and Culture; minister of Social Development, Youth and Sport; minister of Aviation. He was elected senator in 1999, and appointed minister of labour and productivity, 1999-2000. He holds the traditional title of Orubibiye of Opuba 1 of Abonema.
