Yakubu Gowon, retired soldier, former head of state, 81, October 19. Born in Garam, Pankshin local government area of Plateau State, he was educated at St Bartholomew’s School, CMS, Wusasa, Zaria, 1950-1953. He joined the Nigerian Army and was trained at the Officer Cadet Training School, Teshie, Ghana, 1954; Eaton Hall Officer Cadet School, Chester, England, 1955; Royal Military Academy, Sand Hurst, England, 1955-1956; Young Officers’ Training Schools, Hythe and Westminister, England, 1957; Staff College, Cumberely, England, 1962; Joint Service Staff College, Latimer, England, 1965; Warwick University, Coventry, England, 1973-1974. Gowon was appointed acting company commander, 1957-1960; Brigade Major, United Nations Peacekeeping Force, Luluabourg, Congo, 1963; lieutenant colonel, 1963; adjutant-general, Nigerian Army, 1963-1965; chief of staff, Nigerian Army, 1966; member, federal executive council and supreme military council, 1966; head of federal military government and commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, 1966-1975 and promoted major general, 1967 and general, 1971. Gowon holds a doctorate in political science from Warwick University, UK.
