Grace Alele Williams, former vice chancellor, University of Benin, 81, December 16. Born in Warri, Delta State, she studied in Nigeria and the United States of America. She was appointed professor of Mathematics, University of Lagos, in 1976. She was vice-president, World Health Organisation, WHO, committee for early childhood education. Alele Williams was the first Nigerian female university vice chancellor in Nigeria.

Mohammed Abdullahi Abubakar, lawyer, 57, December 11. Born in Gombe State, he was educated at the Jos Primary School, Kano, 1963-1968; Tundu Wada Primary School, Kano, 1969; Government College, Kano, 1970; Ahmadu Bello University, ABU, Zaria, 1974-1978; Nigeria Law School, Lagos, 1978-1979 and University of Washington, Seattle, USA, 1982. Abubakar was appointed state counsel, senior parliamentary counsel, 1979-1983; company secretary and legal adviser, Yankari Games Reserve and Tourism Company Limited, 1982-1986; acting director, Civil Litigations, 1982-1989 and attorney-general, commissioner for  justice, Gombe State, 1990-1992. He was also resident electoral commissioner in Plateau State in 1999.

Edet James Amana, engineer and politician, 75, December 11. Born in Uyabia Oron, Akwa Ibom State, he was educated in Nigeria and the UK. He is the chairman of Amana Group of Companies and a fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, NSE. He is also a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Association of African Development Experts. Amana ia a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Clement Ebri, journalist, economic consultant and former governor of Cross River State, 60, December 11. Born in Ugep, Cross River State, he was educated at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN. He was chairman of the Presidential Review Committee of the 1999 constitution.

Jubrin Ayinla, retired naval officer and administrator, 65, December 10. Born in Babura, Jigawa State, he was educated at Edward Blyden Memorial School, Lafiagi, Lagos, 1953-1954; Holy Trinity School, Kano, 1955-1060; Ibo Union Secondary School, Kano, 1961-1965; Nigeria Defence Academy, 1966-1968 and India Naval School, INS, Nysole India, 1968-1969. Ayinla was commissioned substantive lieutenant, 1970; commander, NNS Enugu and NNS Ibadan, 1971-1972; navigation officer, NNS Dorina and NNS, Nigerian instructor, naval wing, NDA, 1973-1975; commanding officer, NNS Ruwayanro, 1975-1977 and executive officer, NNS Bee Craft, 1977-1979. He became chief of staff, Naval Training Command, NAVTRAC, 1989; commander, Naval Ordinance Corps and chief of personnel, Naval Headquarters, 1991-1992 and flag officer commanding Eastern Naval command, 1992-1994. He was appointed minister of commerce and tourism, 1996-1997; miniter of health, 1997-1998; chief of naval staff, Nigerian Navy, 1998-1999. Ayinla is the AareGbadeniyi of Egbaland and Jagunnade of Lagos.
