Joseph Chiaka Ajaero, general secretary, National Union of Electricity Employees, NUEE, and former deputy national chairman, Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, 49, December 17. Born in Emekuku, Owerri, Imo State, he was educated at Alvan Ikoku College of Education and University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. He later had a postgraduate diploma in Journalism from the Times Journalism Institute, Lagos, and master’s degree in Industrial Labour Relations from the University of Lagos. Ajaero worked as a journalist with Vanguard newspapers and rose to the position of assistant labour editor. In 2001, he joined the NUEE, as head of training and information department.

Solomon
Solomon

Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon, senator representing Lagos West, 54, December 19. He was educated at St. Paul’s Anglican School, Idioro, Mushin, Lagos State, before he proceeded to Oke Ona Grammar School, Abeokuta, Ogun State, for his post-primary education. Solomon later gained admission into the University of Lagos, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science. His first election was in 1997, as member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, representing Mushin Constituency 1. In December 1998, he became the chairman of Mushin local government area from where he was elected a senator.

Buhari
Buhari

Muhammadu Buhari, retired major general and former head of state, 71, December 17. Born in Daura, Kastina State, he was educated in Nigeria, the United Kingdom and India. He was general officer commanding, GOC, 3rd Armoured Division, Jos, 1981-1983. Buhari was the head of state and commander-in-chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces from 1983-1985, before he was overthrown by Ibrahim Babangida. He was chairman, Petroleum Trust Fund, PTF. Buhari was the presidential candidate of the defunct All Nigerian People’s Party, ANPP, in the 2003 and 2007 presidential elections. He dumped ANPP and formed the defunct Congress for Progressives Change, CPC, on whose platform he contested the 2011 presidential election. Buhari is a founding member of the new All Progressives Congress.

Adedeji
Adedeji

Adebayo Adedeji, educationist, administrator and economist, 83, December 21. Born in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, he was educated at the University College, Ibadan, 1953-1954; Leicester University College, 1955-1958; Harvard University, 1960-1961, and the University of London, 1967. Adedeji was appointed assistant secretary, Ministry of Economic Planning, Western Region, 1958-1961; principal assistant secretary, finance, 1962-1963; chairman, Western Nigeria Broadcasting Corporation, 1966-1967; member, Nigeria National Manpower Board, 1968-1971; federal commissioner for economic development and reconstruction, 1971-1975; former chairman, directorate of National Youth Service Corps, NYSC; member, committee on the restructuring of the economic and social sectors, United Nations, 1975; fellow, African Academy of Science, 1991, and has served as economic adviser to many African countries.
