A ten-year-old female bomber kills 19 people in Damaturu, Yobe State in the continued assault of Boko Haram in the North-East of the country

A 10-year-old suspected female Boko Haram suicide bomber on Sunday, July 26, attacked the Damaturu Central Market, Yobe State by detonating an Improvised Explosive Device, IED, strapped to her body killing 19 people. More than 47 others were reportedly injured in the attack that took place in the morning.

An eyewitness said the suspect disguised as a beggar before detonating the explosive that rocked the state capital city with scores of traders abandoning their wares and running away into safety.

Governor Ibrahim Geidam of the state decried the attack in a statement issued by Abdullahi Bego, the state director of Press. In the statement issued on Sunday, said in part: ““This is another sad day in our state in which innocent people were the targets of blood-thirsty terrorists.

“Governor Geidam’s thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and those who sustained injuries. The governor has condemned the attack as callous, barbaric and unjustifiable.

“The governor has called on security agencies in the state to step up their surveillance even as he enjoined the people to remain vigilant about happenings in their areas, and report any suspicious persons or movements to the police.”

Contrary to the number of casualties quoted by the governor, the police reported 15 deaths and 47 injured.

Toyin Gbadegesin, Police public relations officer in the state, gave the figure while briefing journalists on the attack. He said the minor detonated an IED at the main entrance of the market at about 9.30am on the day.

The PPRO also revealed that five units of undetonated IEDs were recovered from the scene of the blast.

The latest blast came six days after suicide bombers in a sport utility vehicle detonated bombs at a police checkpoint at the entrance of Damaturu, where three policemen and 14 civilians were killed.

The Police also recovered six units of IED cylinders in a Highlander Sports Unity Vehicle, SUV, used in attacking the policemen at their duty post along Maiduguri-Damaturu road.
