–

Sambo Dasuki, former security adviser, is under siege following invasion of his house by operatives of the Department of State Security on Thursday, July 16

OPERATIVES of the Department of State Security, DSS, are laying siege on the Abuja home of Sambo Dasuki, a retired colonel and immediate past national security adviser, NSA. The DSS operatives said on Thursday, July 16, that they have taken away some documents and vehicles from his compound. Even at the time of filing in this report, Friday, July 17, operatives were still in Dasuki’s residence searching, opening boxes and looking into documents, thereby preventing Dasuki from attending the Eid Fitri prayer. There were also two operational van of the DSS parked inside Dasuki’s premises with a few armed DSS operatives around.

Unconfirmed reports said that his home in Sokoto was also ransacked by operatives of the DSS. It was learnt that there were questions on how the former NSA disbursed billions of Naira and millions of dollars being earmarked to tackle Boko Haram insurgents to former service chiefs. Dasuki was said to have been the one superintending the disbursement for the counter-insurgency operations against Boko Haram insurgents.

The Buhari administration was said to be looking into the books how certain monies were disbursed on the purchase of arms from Russia and how must they cost; how monies were disbursed for training of members of the special force; why Nigeria took $15 million cash to South Africa, which was eventually seized leading to the nation’s embarrassment; why did the country had to hire mercenaries to fight against Boko Haram and why Nigeria rejected assistance from the United States and the United Kingdom to fight against Boko Haram.

“The invasion of Dasuki’s residence is not unconnected with the determination of the current administration to recover all looted funds by senior officials of the past government, so no one should read any political motives to it,” a source said.

The source also disclosed that the movement of the former service chiefs might be restricted to the country, pending the conclusion of preliminary investigations into how military budgets were executed in the past five years.

It was not clear at press time whether the former NSA was arrested or being placed on house arrest. But visitors were not allowed into his premises at the time of this report. Sources said that Dasuki who was not forewarned about the arrival of the DSS operatives who invaded his home at about 7:00 pm while he was breaking his fast on Thursday evening.

Dasuki who was appointed as NSA by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2012, was Goodluck Jonathan, relieved of his appointment by President Muhammadu Buhari only on Monday, July 13.
