Lagos to Complete Inherited Projects, Embark on New Ones

GANIYU Johnson, Lagos State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, has said that the present administration in the State has shown a deep sense of responsibility and commitment to the completion of all inherited projects and also embarked on new iconic projects that will stand the test of time in spite of dwindling financial resources facing the country.

The commissioner, disclosed this today at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa Ikeja, during the Annual Ministerial Press Briefing of the state government.

He stated that the mandate given to the ministry by the governor is to develop and facilitate world class infrastructure to support the State’s growing population and serve as the critical development driver of the State’s vision of becoming Africa’s model mega city and global economic and financial hub.

To this end, the state government did a thorough assessment of the state of infrastructure at the inception with consultation with relevant stakeholders, before approving the construction, rehabilitation, upgrading and reconstruction of roads and replacement of collapsed vehicular bridge across the state.

According to him, some of these projects include the construction of Ajah Flyover/Upgrading of Freedom Road to Admiralty Road, Eti-Osa; Abule – Egba Flyover, Ifako-Ijaye; Rehabilitation and Upgrading of Strategic Arterial/ Inner roads in Epe; Construction of Pedestrian Bridge, Layby and slip road at Ojodu Berger Bus-stop along Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Others include the construction of 2nd Ojota Pedestrian Bridge, Ojota; Reconstruction of Brown Road, Oshodi in Oshodi – Isolo; Rehabilitation/Upgrading of Aiyetoro Road (Section 1) in Alimosho; Rehabilitation/Upgrading of Ishefun/ Camp Davis/ New Market roads (Section 1) in Alimosho and Replacement of collapsed vehicular bridge at Arowojobe, Mende Kosofe LGA

Ganiyu stated further that many projects are being embarked upon in order to provide an enabling environment for individuals and corporate entities to realize their goals as well as improve on the safety of lives of pedestrians, road connectivity and ease out traffic gridlock on major roads.

He reiterated the governor’s commitment to bringing economic prosperity to Lagosians through massive infrastructural improvement programme at the grassroots, adding that at the advent of the present administration, the ministry put in place a three-fold strategy for the provision of road infrastructure.

“The short term measure is the maintenance of existing roads known as ‘Operation Patch the Roads’ being carried out by the Lagos State Public Works Corporation, LSPWC. The medium term strategy is aimed at the sustainability of existing roads, rehabilitation and construction of new roads, reconstruction of existing and expansion of highways and bridges.

“A total of 244 on-going road projects were inherited from the previous administration in the various Local Government Areas of the State. I wish to inform you that 42 of these projects have been completed while construction works are still on-going on others,” he said.
