The Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice, a human rights group, in a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, alleges that Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ooni of Ife, designate and Metropole Interproject Limited, his company, are involved in an alleged N400 million forgery

THE Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice, CHRSJ, a human rights group, wants the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, to investigate and prosecute Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ooni of Ife designate and Metropole Interproject Limited, his company, over an alleged N400 million forgery involving the late Oba Okunade Sijuade Olubuse 11, immediate past Ooni of Ife and his business empire.

The petition, signed by Alimi Sulaiman Adeniyi, chairman of the CHRSJ and dated Monday November 2, 2015 entitled: “Request for Prosecution of Prince Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi and his Company named Metropole Interproject Limited for the Offence of forgery, Fraudulent Conversion and Obtaining the sum of N400million by false Pretence,” was forwarded to the chairman of the EFCC and a copy was also given to President Muhammadu Buhari.

The anti-graft body was said to have received the petition on Friday, November 6, while a copy of the petition was also forwarded to the Transparency International, TI, office and Embassy of the United Kingdom, UK; United States, US, and Republic of Canada for their notification of the development.

The CHRSJ said it attached series of evidences, including the petition letter dated September 7, 2015 which was written Rotimi Jacobs, SAN, of the  Rotimi Jacobs & Co chambers, alleging N400million fraud against  Ogunwusi and his company.

The group, however, threatened to institute a legal action against the EFCC to compel it to perform its statutory duty if the commission failed, refused and neglected to prosecute Ogunwusi and his company which was allegedly used for the forgery offence.

The petition said in part: “We also refer the chairman to the EFCC’s letter dated 17th September,2015  to principal partner, Olawoyin (Legal Practitioners) and a  letter dated 23rd  September, 2015 from Olawoyin & Olawoyin(Legal Practitioners) to the EFCC on the same subject matter.

“As an organisation committed to promotion of good governance and fighting corruption and various ills confronting our Nation. We are disturbed that up till date and despite overwhelming prima facie evidence against the above named person and his company, your Commission has blatantly refused, failed and or neglected to prosecute the above named  person for such ignominious criminal offences.”

The petitioner charged that if the allegations were made against persons of lower pedigree or mere commoners, the commission would have taken steps to charge such hapless individuals and companies to court.

“We don’t have any personal grudge against Ooni-designate, Prince Enitan Ogunwusi because we believe that God makes a leader but we want justice to be done on any issue of this nature as it has been part of our stand. Anybody alleges of any wrong doing needs to clear his or her name first before occupying any exalted position. It is because Nigeria as a country has been eroded of moral values where brigandage takes the order of the day,” the petition said.
