–

THE Plateau State Government has imposed a 24-hour curfew in Bokkos Local Government Area following the killing of two protesting youths by security personnel. The youth were protesting Monday’s killing of a traditional ruler in the area.

SAF Ron Kulere, Lazarus Agai, was killed by gunmen suspected to be herdsmen along with his wife, son and orderly. The Commissioner of Police, Plateau State Command, Olatunde Oladunjoye, who confirmed the development, told our correspondent that the two men were killed when they tried to prevent men of the Special Task Force from evacuating some persons trapped in the area as a result of a riot triggered by Agai’s murder.

Oladunjoye explained that after a visit to the area, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of operations, Joseph Habila, a security meeting was held at the government House and the decision to impose the curfew was taken. “We have to take the action to prevent endangered persons from coming to harm. The situation will be reviewed as the situation improves.”

The Spokesperson of the STF, Capt. Ikedichi Iweha, told our correspondent that those killed died in crossfire when protesting youths tried to prevent security personnel from evacuating people, including a Fulani leader from the scene of the protest. “The curfew was imposed so also as to allow personnel to carry out the main task of fishing out the perpetrators of the act,” he said. – Punch
