YUNUSA Dahiru, alias Yellow, who alleged abductor of 14-year-old Ese Oruru, from Bayelsa State, was arraigned before a federal high court in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, on Tuesday, March 7, charged with abduction, kidnapping, unlawful carnal knowledge and sexual exploitation.

Dahiru is facing a five-count charge of criminal abduction, Illicit sex, sexual exploitation and unlawful canal knowledge Oruru.

The accused was arraigned before Justice H. A. Nganjiwa amid tight security.

The charges, which were read to Yunusa, state: “That Yunusa Dahiru, a male resident in Opolo-Epie area of Yenagoa in Bayelsa State, conspired with the duo of Dankano Mohammed and Mallam AlHassan between August 2015 and February 2016 to commit an offence of abduction and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 27(a) of the Trafficking in persons (prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015.

Yunusa, who wore a yellow Kaftan and brown cap amid heavy security, pleaded not guilty to the charges read to him in pidgin English.

Kenneth Dika, prosecution counsel, said the state was ready to prove its case against the accused and promised to call six witnesses to ensure successful prosecution of the case.

Kayode Olaoshebikan, counsel to Yunusa, applied for bail for his client, adding: “I am confident of winning the case. In fact, there is no case.”

“It is easy for the prosecution to bring up charges but Yunusa as a man has pleaded not guilty and it is left for the prosecution to prove their case beyond every reasonable doubt.

“It is a case of two love birds. In our social parlance, we call it elopement, but government and the state prefer to call it abduction and it is left for the court to decide whether it is abduction or elopement of two minors.

“Yunusa is 18 years old and the girl in question is 14 years old,” Olashebikan said.

The case was adjourned to March 14 for hearing of the bail application by Olaoshebikan.
