THE Chairperson Nigerian Army Officers Wives Association (NAOWA), 1 Division Chapter, Dr Mrs Halima Tafida-Wase, says breast cancer is not a death sentence when detected early.
Tafida-Wase stated this at NAOWA’s Cancer Awareness Week 2025, held at its Secretariat, Ribadu Cantonment, NDA old site, in Kaduna on Sunday .
The News Agency of NIgeria (NAN) report that the theme was ‘My Breast and I’.
She said, “The theme reminds every woman that her breast is not just a part of her body, but a part of her story, her identity, and her health.
” It’s a call to pay attention, to listen to there bodies, and to care for ourselves the way we care for others.
“For too long, many women have suffered in silence out of fear, shame, or lack of awareness. But today, we are breaking that silence.
“We are saying loudly and clearly that early detection saves lives.
“Breast cancer is not a death sentence. When discovered early, it can be treated successfully.”
Tafida-Wase said that was why such programmes were important to educate, to encourage, and to empower.
She said, “#very woman here today should remember, know your breast.
“Examine your breast regularly.Report any unusual change to your doctor.
“Let’s remove the fear that often surrounds this topic.
“Let’s replace it with knowledge, courage, and love for ourselves and for one another“
The chairperson appreciated all the Doctors, Nurses, survivors, and volunteers who continued to champion their cause.
Tafida-Wase added, ” You are the real heroes, your work, your stories, and your strength inspire us all.”
She also commended the Chief of Army Staff’s wife for the thoughtful and life-changing initiative.
Tafida-Wase added: “Your concern for the health and well-being of women across all formations is deeply commendable.
“Your health is your wealth. Don’t wait for pain before you act. Know your body, take care of it, and never be afraid to seek help.
“Together, let’s build a community where no woman feels alone in this fight where awareness replaces ignorance, and where hope replaces fear.
“May this programme leave us all better informed, inspired, and determined to protect our lives.”
Also, Dr Rabi’a Adams, a Medical Surgeon who lectures on brest cancer awareness, said the campaign was to educate women about breast cancer’s signs and symptoms.
Adams said the move was also to encourage the women to seek medical attention promptly if they noticed any unusual signs.
“This is to reach the women how to perform monthly breast self-examinations, also to be vigilance and regular check-ups.”
She also emphasised the importance of being proactive about one’s health.
Adams called on women to prioritise their health, be aware of breast cancer risks, and take proactive steps to detect any potential issues early.(NAN)
