HAJIYA Asabe Balarabe, the Sokoto State Commissioner for Health, on Tuesday urged mothers to embrace proper breastfeeding practices.

This is to ensure the survival and well-being of their children, thereby shaping a brighter future for the state.

Balarabe made this statement during the 2024 World Breastfeeding Week event organised by the ministry in collaboration with the State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (SPHDA) and development partners.

“Mothers have a crucial role in shaping the future of society through breastfeeding,” she said.

Represented by the SPHDA Coordinator for Reproductive Health, Shafa’atu Bello, the commissioner emphasised that breastfeeding was not just a natural act but a powerful tool that has the potential to save lives.

“As a mother ministry, we will continue to support and promote programmes that encourage breastfeeding in our state.

“Moreover, I appeal to all the stakeholders to work together to create a culture where breastfeeding is not just encouraged but celebrated as a cornerstone of maternal and child health,” she added.

Earlier, the Special Adviser, SPHDA, Alhaji Garba Bello, represented by the agency’s Director of Community Health Services, Dr Tukur Magaji, reiterated commitment to supporting any programme aimed at promoting the health sector in the state.

Bello thanked the development partners for their contributions to the success of the week.

Commenting on behalf of the development partners, the State Coordinator of FHI 360, Mr Victor Osatogbe, advised mothers to adhere to the breastfeeding advice offered by health personnel.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the was themed “Closing the Gap, Breastfeeding Support for All”.

The annual celebration aims to increase awareness of the importance of breastfeeding, share information on strategies and promote enabling environments that support women to breastfeed successfully. (NAN)
