Subscribers to telecom services who may have had to live with poor service delivery and nonchalant attitude towards genuine complaints in the hands of their service providers now have reason to smile.

The Nigeria Communication Commission, NCC, has asked subscribers facing any of the ill treatments, as well as arbitrary disconnection of lines to call the commission’s toll-free line 622 for redress.

The NCC stated this on its official twitter handle at the weekend, saying: “Do you experience arbitrary disconnection of lines, nonchalant attitude towards genuine complaints, poor services delivery etc. Kindly call NCC toll free line 622 for redress.”

There have been allegations of service providers taking advantage of subscribers who in most cases have had to bear the burden for dearth of avenue for redress.

The toll free line is part of the commission’s effort to protect the interest of telecom subscribers and ensure service providers improve their services to enable customers get value for their money.

Realnews reports that this is part of the execution of one of the eight-point agenda the NCC adopted when Prof. Umar Danbatta became the executive vice chairman of the commission in 2015 to protect and empower consumers. Danbatta espoused the vision to protect consumers from unfair practices through availability of information and education required to make informed choices in the use of ICT services.

His strategy is to strengthen initiatives, educate and inform consumers in their use of communications services and act swiftly and consistently whenever necessary in the use of enforcement to protect telecom services consumers’ rights and privileges.
