THE Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, CITN, has said that it will continue to create opportunities for its members and enlighten the government on the need to employ professionals. Olajumoke Simplice, president, CITN, said this during the institute’s 28th annual general meeting, which was also held online.

In the institute’s 2019 annual report obtained on Wednesday, she said, “In response to the challenges faced by members, particularly at the states, council has sustained its advocacy for opportunities for members to be engaged.

“To this end, the creation of tax units manned by a qualified tax professional at Ministries, Departments and Agencies, is being canvassed. The same applies at the federal level where we made representation at the committee set up by the National Council on Establishment to assess the relevance of professional certificates in the scheme of service and their entry point in the service.”

Simplice said resulting from the feedback received during interactions with members and diverse stakeholders, the council outlined some strategic initiatives to boost the value of the institute’s certificate, the creation of opportunities for members and value offering to stakeholders in the area of tax advocacy and advisory.

She said the CITN represented to relevant agencies of government at the federal and state levels for proper placement of the institute’s certificate in the scheme of service. The institute, she added, pushed for the establishment of a tax unit in MDAs of government manned by tax professionals, particularly members of the institute.

She also said the institute engaged with the leadership of the Federal Inland Revenue Service to implement the filling of tax returns by licensed tax practitioners and the use of CITN stamp and seal on such returns. “This is being pursued in the light of the various court pronouncements on the legal right of the institute to so regulate the tax profession in Nigeria,” Simplice said.
