AS part of its efforts to reduce fake products in the Nigerian market, the Consumer Protection Council, CPC, has raided Thae-Zek Rapid Link Nigeria Limited in Lagos, for allegedly distributing fake telecommunication cables and other materials. The raid which was carried out with the aid of policemen took place at the Jankara market in Lagos.

Nggada Joshua Yakubu, head of Lagos office of the council, said the equipment were part of the components used in building cell sites for service providers like MTN, Airtel, Etisalat and Globacom. Speaking after the raid, Yakubu emphasised the fact that the council would not look away from the activities of scrupulous businessmen, who are bent on selling fake products to unsuspecting consumers.

He described Thae-Zek Rapid Link Nigeria Limited as one of the organisations sabotaging the efforts of GSM providers to give Nigerians quality services. “CPC has continued to warn sellers of fake products to look elsewhere for their activities. Nigeria market is not a dumping ground for fake products and we will continue to descend on enemies of consumers, who are involved in such acts. We will also increase our effort in the area of creating awareness among consumers on the danger of bad products.  Thae-Zek Rapid Link Nig. Ltd is obviously one of the many saboteurs of the effort of the service providers in the telecom sector. We are aware that using fake telecommunication equipments will only result in poor services, hence our determination to frustrate people who are promoting such products,” he said.

According to Yakubu, in the last three months the council have boosted consumer education and awareness, adding that things are looking up brightly for Nigerian consumers. “The body language of the current administration has sent a strong signal to manufacturers and service providers that it will no more be business as usual. Nigerian consumers too are now more opened to issues related to their rights. They are wiser, more educated about their rights and know where to complain if anybody puts a fake product on their laps. At CPC, we are not in any way in doubt that government will give us the necessary backing to defend innocent consumers in Nigeria,”
