Anambra lawmakers debate ICT, fisheries bills

The Anambra State House of Assembly has debated a bill for a law to establish Anambra State Information and Communication Technology, ICT, agency and to provide for related matters.

Pascal Agbodike, deputy majority leader, noted that the bill, if passed into law would help in data documentation and easy retrieval.

Agbodike said that the Agency would ensure that the state website and applications were constantly updated and supervised the delivery of Anambra State e-governance projects.

Uche Okafor, member representing Ayamelum constituency, said that the agency would ensure compliance with payment of the various state levies relating to the agency, working with relevant state IGR collection agents and organs.

Okafor said that the ICT agency should collaborate with relevant law enforcement agencies on cyber crimes against the state to arrest suspects.

The bill was read for the second time and later sent to committee on Information for further deliberation and scrutiny.

The legislators also debated on a bill for a law to establish Fisheries and Aquaculture Business Development Agency, FABDA, and other related matters.

In his submission, Agbodike believed that the bill would create job opportunities for Ndi Anambra through mechanised farming, setting good standards for fishery business.

Harford Oseke, the deputy speaker, in supporting the debate, noted that the agency would help to improve fishery and aquaculture business.

“This will invariably, improve fishery and aquaculture in the state’’.

Member representing Nnewi South 1 constituency, Mr Kingsley Iruba agreed that the agency would help to regulate the business of fishery in Anambra.

Iruba emphasised that the business would help the private and commercial farmers to come together under one umbrella.

With the support of one third of the legislators, the bill was read for the second time and referred to committee on Agriculture for further discussions and amendments. The House adjourned to reconvene on September 6.
