RICE farmers in Anambra State have been urged to produce more rice as the state government has become major off-taker, providing ready market for home grown rice.

Harry Udu, the Anambra State Head of Service, said this during the commencement of rice distribution to the workers and pensioners at the Jerome Udoji Secretariat, Awka.

“The resolve of government to annually purchase not less than 50,000 bags of Anambra rice from farmers has far reaching positive effect on the economy of the state.

“It is a way that the government has helped to create jobs, provide incentives to farmers as well as source of positive reinforcement for workers which reflect positively on the fabric of the society,’’ Udu said.

This year’s rice distribution marked the fifth consecutive time that state government workers would be receiving such gifts from the government.

Udu thanked Gov. Willie Obiano for his consistent benevolence to the workers and people of the state.

He noted that Anambra remained “the only state in Nigeria which gives its workers such gifts of a bag of rice every end of the year’’.

“Let us look at our neighbours. I mean other states and notice that Anambra Government remains the most worker-friendly government.

“Consider the benefits arranged for workers this end of year, from the proposed payment of leave allowances and December salaries on 5th and 15th December, respectively to gifts of a bag of rice to each worker.’’

He urged the workers to reciprocate these kind gestures by staying dedicated and loyal to the government that had done so much for them.

Udu assured the government of his continued support and those of the workforce.
