Anambra to audit financial management of World Bank assisted programmes

THE Anambra State Government is to ensure auditing of all financial commitments of the World Bank in community and social development projects in the state.

Gov. Willie Obiano said this when he received the staff members of the World Bank assisted community and social development programmes, who paid him courtesy visit at Amawbia.

The team led by Igwe Roland Odegbo, intimated the governor on the level of interventions by the World Bank in poverty reduction within the focal communities of the state.

The World Bank assisted community and social development programmes were introduced in Anambra in August 2018.

The agency was currently intervening in more than 80 communities and had completed 37 projects within the poorest communities.

Gov Obiano commended the agency for replicating similar initiative of his administration’s `Community Choose Your Project’ programme.

He ordered property auditing of the financial commitments to the project to ensure that standard procedures were followed in all processes.

Igwe Odegbo, chairman of the team said that the project was being implemented under the auspices of the state community and social development agency.

He noted that the goal was to increase access of the poor to improve in social and natural resources, infrastructure services in a sustainable manner throughout Nigeria.

“This strategic approach is community-driven development, which empowers the communities by granting them resources and authority to use them responsibly, ‘’ he said.

“The communities will plan; part finance, implement, monitor and maintain sustainable and socially inclusive multi-sectoral micro projects,’’ he added.

The focal Local Government Areas of the interventions using the states poverty map include Awka North, Anambra East, Anambra West and Ayamelum.

Others are Orumba North, Dunukofia, Orumba South, Anaocha, Oyi, Ogbaru, Idemili North and Ihiala.

“Intervention is in 37 focal communities in the state and has completed 36 micro projects in those 37 focal projects,’’ he explained.
