THE Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB) has called for more synergy with the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) to enhance standard in the housing and construction sector.

Mr Fadil Elegbede, the NIOB National Secretary, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja that ensuring standardised materials in building projects would help in preventing building collapse.

Elegbede maintained that ensuring standardisation in the building sector would enhance safety of products, economies of scale, greater quality of products and compliance with legislation requirements.

“SON is one of the Federal Government agencies saddled with the responsibility of certifying the standard of materials coming in or going out of the country, they have their own work.

“We are professionals, so we need to set standards in conjunction with them (SON) to check building and construction materials coming into the country to ensure good standard.

“There should be a synergy between the professional bodies and SON since it’s the technical committee to ensure standardisation,’’ Elegbede noted.

He noted that such synergy would help material production to be tailored towards Nigerian standard and avoid using substandard materials that are not compatible to our weather conditions.

“We have different weather conditions and environment in the country and there are some materials that might not be workable here.

“And when you import them, you want them to be fixed for you to use here, so there are challenges in that aspect.

“With proper checking and regulation, such products will not be in circulation to avoid problems.’’ he said.

The secretary said that the institute was committed to addressing issues surrounding standardisation of materials to boost economic growth and enhance safety in the country.

He explained that the 2018 National Conference and Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled from July 30 to Aug. 3 in Abuja will go a long way in addressing some of the issues of standardisation and professionalism.

The conference and AGM has as its theme: “The Housing Sector and National Economic Development”. (NAN)
