TONY Ojobo, director public affairs, Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, has appealed to public relations practitioners in Nigeria and all Nigerians to cultivate the attitude of speaking positively about the country and themselves because in telling the Nigerian story we all have a duty to take charge and shape the narratives in favour of ourselves and our country.

Ojobo amplified the oxymoronic dictum of a once popular movement called 419POSITIVE project which launched series of programmes in early 2000 to recreate the narrative about Nigeria as a counterpoise to the negative portrayal of Nigeria as a nation of scammers. Ojobo thus supports writers of that 419POSITIVE project, such as Oluwapelumi and Kunle Durojaiye who captured distinctive features of Nigeria in write-ups such as CELEBRATING 419 REASONS TO LIKE NIGERIA.

The NCC Director Public Affairs stated this earlier today in a lucid presentation titled SPEAKING FOR THE PUBLIC SECTOR: ISSUES, CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS FOR REBRANDING IN GOVERNMENT, made at the Conference and Annual General Meeting of the NigerianInstitute of Public Relations which took place at the Sheraton Hotel and Towers Abuja.

He spoke quite remarkably about branding the public sector from the terse conceptual clarifications to the imperatives of rebranding in government; issues in speaking for the public sector; NCC branding strategy; emergence of the new media; changing the narratives, Ojobo offered spectacular suggestions towards rebranding public communication, highlighting the role of PR in the enterprise.

Other presenters at the Conference include Professor Umaru Pate of Bayero University Kano; Dr. Rotimi Oladele, President of NIPR; Jerry Sawyerr, Country Lead of Webber-Shanwick; Robyn de Villiers, Chairman/CEO Africa, Burson-Marsteller and Vice President of APRA; and Frank Tamuno-Koko, Chairman NIPR Board of Fellows. The Minister of FCT was represented by his Special Adviser on Media, Abubakar Sani.
