The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, says the telecom sub sector is threatened by operators indulging in sharp practices

THE Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, has said sharp practices by operators in the telecom sector are threatening the stability of the sector.

Senator Olabiyi Durojaiye, chairman of the NCC board, disclosed this at the sensitisation workshop on the Code of Governance in the telecom sector in Kano yesterday.

Durojaiye said some of the operators embarked on sharp practices to maximise their profits.

“The stability of the telecom industry is being threatened by sharp practices by the operators. Some of them encourage mask calling just to maximise profits, but they are cheating on the system.

He said this was one of the reasons that prompted the NCC to make the Code of Governance compulsory in the sector.

Stringent measures, he said, would be taken against any detected unethical behaviour and industrial malpractice by business entities operating within the telecom sector and under its regulatory ambience in the country.

In his remarks, the NCC Executive Vice Chairman, Prof. Umar Danbatta, said adherence to good corporate governance would create a focus on value creation proposition that led to sustainable growth and stability in the telecom ecosystem.
